SPANISH MACKEREL BASIC FLOATLINE RIG
8/0 VMC O’SHAUGHNESSY HOOK ON 86LB WIRE 

This is a basic float line Spanish Mackerel rig. The wire is Haywire twisted using a Specialised tool. Dubro EZ twist Pro.

I have used this rig in 10-30 m of water many times and have taken many Mackerel in the paddocks and out on the reef. I always put out a Pilly Mackerel floater while fishing for Reds and Coral Trout and more often than not hook up a Spanish. Throw the odd scrap in and a Pilly cube every now and then to get the Mackerel feeding back towards the boat, and when they see this nicely presented full Pilly with the hook embedded (hidden) inside, bang your on.

I have also found in slack water you throw this out behind the boat and let it sink, if there is no hit after 10  or so minutes, very slowly retrieve the full Pilly and so long as the bait is nicely presented and dosnt spin with guts hanging out and is already chewed up, Mackerel will pounce on the moving bait. And when you do come across that incidental large pelagic Sailfish, Wahoo, Marlin, Tuna, Mahi etc they wont be shy of this well designed rig. Using this quality setup and hardware you have very good odds of staying connected.

Just a tip, Spanish can be very finicky when it comes to wire and hardware, So I advise you tie this one strait onto your leader, or use a small good quality coast lock snap swivel. (not some 300lb coast lock snap). Keep it stealthy.
