SPANISH MACKEREL LIVEBAIT FLOATLINE AND SLOW TROLL RIG
TRIPLE 8/0 VMC O’SHAUGHNESSY HOOKS AND 8/0 LIVEBAIT HOOK ON 105LB WIRE TO 90LB JAPANESE MONO
This is a specialty live bait float line and very slow live bait troll rig for big live baits. I have fine tuned and used this one for many years now with excellent results. Designed to be used in the tropics with Live School Macs, Live Yellowtail Fusilier (Mac-Crac) Down South you could use large live Slimies, Tailor, School Mac.. Whatever the going large live bait you have gathered on the day. With the new Spanish Mackerel restrictions in QLD you want to make that 1 fish caught a good one, So as the saying goes- Big Bait= Big Fish.
The trick is with this rig to keep your livie alive and free swimming by putting the livebait hook into the nose or just behind the fishes head into the shoulder and only one of the Ganged hooks into the livies back. The remaining gangs should be free.
The longish 1.5 m of mono trace to the wire trace keeps all the snap swivels and hardware away from the bait. Mackerel can be finicky when it comes to swivels etc. The rig includes a 3-way crane swivel to clip onto. You will notice a small piece of mono attached to the swivel to tie on a lead if required. When the current is running, just add a small lead or whatever size is required to get the bait down a bit. ( you will seldom catch any Mackerel with the bait right up on the surface in steady to strong currents, get that bait down a bit and you will do much better).
I usually put this one out while fishing wrecks. When I Specifically chase Spanish Mackerel I have this set up Rigged N Ready on a designated rod. When I catch a School/doggy Mackerel I put him strait on and send him out, If there is a big mackerel round they will nail those school/doggy macs every time. Also a good way to get past the pesky small macs and pickers that take your pillys.
This rig can also be used for super slow live bait trolling. I have done it many times with livies strait behind the boat or paravanes and ownriggers at 1-2 knots. A slow trolled livebait is irresistible to Spanish Mackerel.
Suitable for LIVE Yellowtail Fusilier, School/Doggy Mac, Yakkas, larger Slimies, Tailor even small Barracuda, Whatever large Mackerel eat in your area.
