SPANISH MACKEREL ULTIMATE FLOATLINE RIG
8/0 VMC O’SHAUGHNESSY HOOK ON 86LB WIRE TO 90LB JAPANESE MONO 

This is the best float line Spanish Mackerel rig you will come across. I have fine tuned and used this one for many years and have caught hundreds of Spanish Mackerel and some absolute giants on this one, just using the humble old full Pilly. 

The main feature of this rig is the longish 1.5 m of mono trace to the wire trace. This keeps all the snap swivels, sinkers and hardware away from the bait. Mackerel can be finicky when it comes to hardware. The rig includes a 3-way crane swivel to clip or tie onto. You will notice a small piece of  mono attached to the swivel to tie on a lead if required. When the current is running, just add a small lead  whatever size is required to get the bait down a bit. (You will seldom catch any Mackerel with the bait right up on the surface in steady to strong currents, get that bait down a bit and you will do much better). 

I have used this rig in 40-80 m of water many times and got the bait down 20-30 meters and have taken many Mackerel in the paddocks and out on the reef. I always put this one out while fishing for Coral Trout and Reds and usually catch a Spanish Mackerel whilst bottom fishing. Throw the odd scrap in and a Pilly cube every now and then to get the Mackerel feeding back towards the boat, and when they see this nicely presented full Pilly with the hook embedded (hidden) inside, bang your on. I have also found in slack water you throw this out behind the boat and let it sink, if there is no hit after 15  or so minutes, very slowly retrieve the full Pilly and so long as the bait is nicely presented, guts intact and dosnt spin Mackerel will pounce on the moving bait.

When you do come across that incidental large pelagic Sailfish, Wahoo, Marlin, Tuna, Mahi etc they wont be shy of this well designed rig, and with the quality hardware and construction you have very good odds of staying connected.

Suitable for full Pillys, Whole Sauri and Garfish.

Just clip  or tie it on, add a lead if applicable and your Rigged N Ready.
